Survey Methodology Workshop

Thirteen participants from the Advanced Youth Fellowship Programme gathered at YUVA Center, Kharghar on 25th September, 2011 for a capacity building workshop on Survey Methodology.

The workshop began with an ice-breaker and a round of introductions thiat gave participants an opportunity to get to know each other better and reconnect. This was followed by a series of interactive activities

Let’s manage a budget:

This was an interesting activity facilitated by Shrutika, a PUKAR research associate. Participants were divided into three teams and asked to work on a case study regarding a woman and her family’s income and expenditure.  The group’s task was to enable Savita to manage her family budget. Each team was given 15 minutes to work out a budget plan. The activity generated several related topics of discussion and enabled participants to analyze situations from multiple angles. The activity also got participants present to their own biases and pre-assumptions about several things around them.

Activity 2: Let’s design a Survey:

Participants then were requested to sit in their original research groups and were asked to design a questionnaire to conduct a survey in order to understand how people manage their monthly family budget in their localities. Each group was given 20 minutes to design a questionnaire. The groups then presented their questionnaires and received feedback on their approach.

Activity 3: Let’s Understand Surveys:

Subsequently, facilitators Sunil and Shrutika explained the characteristics of surveys as a research method. They talked about what a Survey is and when it is appropriate to use. They also introduced various types of surveys, the merits and demerits of each and effective ways to design a questionnaire. The session concluded with a discussion on ethics to keep in mind when conducting surveys. Participants raise several queries and shared their observations and past research experiences making the discussions more enriching and engaging for all.
